How to stop being BORING?

Spread the love

Do you think you are a boring person?

Do you think you are easily bored?

It’s completely fine if your answer is a “YES” to either of these questions or even both of them.

And to be honest, it’s not your fault either, it’s something bigger than that and understanding that would be the first step towards stop being boring or bored.

We are living in the digital era and it’s such an amazing time to live in. We have Whatsapp to communicate with our friends and family at any instant, We have Instagram to post about our lives and see what others are doing and we have Netflix to make sure we keep entertaining ourselves with amazing shows every day.

These are really exciting times but like every other show on Netflix or the reality behind every #couplegoals on Instagram, there is a backstory to it as well.

“It makes us addicted”

We are curious beings and we are always in the lookout for new information to process which in turn gives us a hit of dopamine (instant pleasure) and we keep going back to it.

What does this mean?

It means that we are surrounded by so many dopamine-releasing substances that our patience level has taken a hit. We always feel the need to do something, to watch something, to hear something that constantly keeps us at an exciting stage.

We have developed a short attention span because of this and this is the reason we are always chasing dopamine.

This is why

  • We have a hard time listening to others
  • We have a hard time reading books
  • We have a hard time staying in any relationships

We are constantly running from one place to another in search of dopamine, very similar to a drug addict who keeps running desperately in search of drugs.

And in return

  • We become bored when we don’t find anything exciting
  • We become a boring person because we don’t learn anything new, we are just running around the same old things that make us feel excited.

I am sure by now you might have got the gist of why a lot of people have started to become boring and bored so easily!

What to do about this “BORING PANDEMIC?

Don’t worry! There is a way out of this addiction problem. These 4 tips would definitely make you more interesting and mindful:

  • Seek more Serotonin and less Dopamine: Serotonin and Dopamine are both important for our survival and our functioning. While dopamine gives us an instant pleasure, Serotonin is responsible for long term happiness.  Our life today is surrounded by too many dopamine inhibitors and we keep running back to them because of their instant reward but it also makes us boring and obvious at times. When you start investing your time and efforts in reading new things, learning new skills, building new hobbies, your brain releases serotonin and you get long term satisfaction and plenty of things to talk about. This way, you will never ever get bored and wouldn’t be boring either.
  • Build Better Habits: Your habits define a lot of your thoughts, your actions, and what you repeatedly consume. If you are addicted to the habit of checking your smartphone every minute, you wouldn’t be able to learn new things and build new hobbies. Start with building new habits that would help you grow personally and professionally. Here’s how you can do it. You can start with reading new books, watching series that help you learn new things and when you do that, you would always have something exciting to talk about in a group of people.
  • Start listening: A smart person speaks and a wise person listens. And there’s a reason behind it. The more you listen, the higher are your chances of grasping and learning new things. So, Make sure you start listening to people, observe them, and do that without any judgment or bias. I understand it would be hard at first but every time you find your attention diverting, bring back your attention to the present. This would make sure you respect the other person and they would merely pass the favor.
  • Stop comparing yourself to others: This is one of the biggest reasons why people end being “boring”. When we are constantly comparing ourselves to others, We try way too hard to copy their life and in return, we start losing ourselves. The most interesting and exciting person is the one who stays unique to who they are. When you stop comparing yourself to others, you automatically act confident and attractive in front of others. Here’s how to do it.
